We can see the speed of decomposition of organic matter has to be taken by biology fast:

1. On the Soil Biocoenosis by observing how the organic matter (manure) on the soil decomposes.
2. In the soil crop rests  must decompose within a year. When we see that crop rests from from previous seasons are still in the soil, there is a problem with soil life. If the rests cannot be found we can conclude that decomposition is taking place. (Voisin, A). Another easy way is to bury small portions organic matter at different spots of the farm and check periodically to see how fast they decompose. (Tea Bag INDEX)
