October 3rd & 4th, 2020. Course in applied agricultural microbiology in Florence, Italy with Deafal

Last 3rd and 4th October 2020 Italian NGO Deafal and Rockinsoils organized the second edition of the applied soil microbiology course. The course combined theory and practice, building up from the basics of soil microbiology giving sets of tools to assess soil condition, humus and biology. The workshop on microscopy was especially interesting as allowed participants to identify different elements that play a role in the soil fertility such as minerals, biodiversity and organic matter in different stages of degradation.

Participants are now able to reproduce several types of soil beneficial microbes and to apply them accordingly to specific farm processes.

Course applied microbiology to Agriculture in Italy

Next February, I meet again with my friends of Deafal in Italy. Last time was in 2011. This time we organize a practical course in microbiology applied to agriculture.

In this course we will see how the microbiology works, how to evaluate it using different practical tools, from rice traps to microscopy.

Participants will learn how to reproduce the main functional groups of soil microbes sourced from local environment and use them to improve farm processes for the soil, the plants and the animals.

Een chroma is een beeld van de bodem met informatie over de beschikbare stoffen en activiteit van het bodemleven. De vorm, kleuren en texturen van de chroma geven de bodemconditie weer. Het beeld  laat de diversiteit en beschikbaarheid van mineralen zien en het afbraakproces van de organische stof (humificatie).

Chroma’s zijn krachtige –en betaalbare instrumenten voor de boer om zelf snel inzicht in de staat en werking van zijn bodem en de nutriëntenkringloop te krijgen. En om de impact van zijn/haar beheer zichtbaar maken en te volgen.

Na deze cursus kun je zelf chroma’s van bodems en compost maken en interpreteren.

Deze cursus is voor:

· Akkerbouwers, veehouders, fruittelers, (kas)tuinbouwers
· Hoveniers, Natuurbeheerders, landschapsarchitecten,
· Landbouwingenieurs, studenten, etc

Je leert om Chromas van je eigen bodem of compost te maken en deze te interpreteren. Daarnaast bespreken we mogelijke maatregelen om bodemfuncties te herstellen via beheer en/of via inputs.

Programma:

Deelnemers aan deze cursus leren met de praktische en low-cost techniek van chroma’s maken om zelf een diagnose van de bodem en haar processen te stellen. Deze cursus duurt circa 12 uur en is verdeeld over 2 dagen.

Dag 1: Theorie en praktijk (Rubén Borge):
Theorie

  • Een chroma volgens de Pfeiffer methode.
  • Processen in de bodem: Evolutie en beschikbaarheid van de mineralen en organische stof in de bodem.

Praktijk

  • Bemonsteringstechnieken
  • Waarnemingen
  • Materialenlijst
  • Lab procedé chromatest
  • Maken van een chroma van eigen bodem en/of compost

Dag 2: Interpretatie (Rubén Borge en Martijn van Vijfeijken)

  • Bespreken standaard Chroma’s (van verschillende bodemtype’s en compost) om beelden en patronen te leren herkennen
  • Bespreken afbraak processen van organische stof, mineralisatie en de activiteit van het bodemleven aan de hand van chroma’s
  • Intrepreteren eigen chroma (gemaakt op de eerste cursus dag)
