E. Pfeiffer in 1960s developed this analytic method to assess quality of soils and composts. Nowadays paper chromatography is used world widely in many applications in the food, the forensic or pharmaceutical industries. For us, this is a low tech method to to observe the processes in a soil. Chromas tell us about how is the soil’s condition, and the ability of life to form humic substances under those conditions. The presence and forming of these substances in the soil are key to sustainable soil fertility since their presence.
